NEPEAN HIGHWAY THEN AND NOW
Nepean Highway (MR3) is the main southern arterial for Melbourne's southern suburbs, metropolitan route 3 running about 92 km to Portsea. Since there is no appropriate route for freeway provision between Mordialloc and the city (besides linking the Mornington Peninsular Freeway with Monash Freeway, although when the Scoresby Freeway is completed, that will be a full link, although it is a little out of the way), a 5km undivided section between Moorrabin and Elsternwick was duplicated with space for wide service road between 1977 and 1982. Closer to the city, a section of St Kilda Road, then called High Street, between Carlisle Street and St Kilda Junction was also duplicated, although much earlier, late 1960's. Here are some shots of Nepean Highway.
1) Nepean Highway, 1977 and now, looking north, Brighton. 2) Nepean Highway, Gardenvale, looking north towards Martin Street, 1975 and now 3) Looking west up Bay Street, North Brighton, from Nepean Hwy, 1975 and now. Pole in foreground is the same. Church is visible, as well as pine tree, which in old shot can be faintly seen. 4) Nepean Hwy, Moorabin, both 1975. Shot 1, south towards junction. Shot 2, north towards Dendy Park. 5) Looking south towards railway bridge, Elsternwick, 1975 and now. 6) Nepean Hwy, from Bay Street looking north. 7) Martin Street, Gardenvale, looking east towards Nepean Highway, 1975
